MAY MORNING

                            for Tom Raworth

The writing itch
nigh wholly scratched.

Low smudge of
peach-colored sun.

Up in a hickory
a persistent black-

throated green woodsheds
its Z-strain

syllabics.  Everywhere impertinent
arrangements of greens.
